In the Forest Futures Lab we are interested in resolving how ecosystems will respond to climate change. However, ecosystems are complex, and the effects of climate change manifest across several hierarchical levels of organization. This means that multi-scaled investigations integrating ecosystem, community, and global change ecology are critical. The Forest Futures lab at Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies advances knowledge of the changing Earth system by uncovering rules that govern interactions and feedbacks among forests, disturbances, and climate.
We use experiments and process-based simulation to understand where, when, and, why forests and their carbon storage capacity will change over the next century.
